Developing a successful and satisfying legal practice takes time, commitment, and proper training. At AKC Law, our Associate Development Program helps ensure that our associates are constantly learning, growing, and expanding their knowledge base.
The firm is committed to providing our associates with meaningful responsibility and practical experience. Associates have opportunities to negotiate transactions, manage litigation matters and work directly with clients, all with the guidance and mentorship of senior lawyers.
AKC Law offers periodic trainings for associates that focus on substantive legal topics and personal organizational and developmental skills, including time management and planning, leadership skills, technology, client relationship building, and business development. Each associate is assigned a mentor to help guide the associate in his or her professional development.
Associates are also encouraged to continue their legal education through local and national seminars. Associates receive oral evaluations of their work product from the assigning attorneys and periodic written evaluations, which provide them with feedback on professional and personal skills, including issue analysis, research, writing skills, oral presentation, use of time, efficiency, attitude, and responsibility.
The firm has a long history of developing its partners from its associate ranks. The firm does not have a set partnership track. We believe that partnership comes when an associate has demonstrated his or her ability and commitment to the firm, which varies depending on the associate.
Associate compensation consists of a competitive base salary and a bonus based on business generation and work produced. The firm offers a competitive benefits package that includes a marketing allowance, a continuing legal education allowance, medical and dental insurance, life and AD&D insurance, disability insurance, pretax health and dependent care reimbursement plan, and a 401(k) Plan with a profit sharing contribution after one year. The firm pays professional liability insurance premiums for all of our lawyers.
Our Associate Engagement Program ensures that we have fun as well! We regularly schedule activities to encourage associates to get to know each other and the partners and staff. These activities include firm parties, lunches, after-work happy hours, and golf outings.

SUMMER ASSOCIATES
AKC Law uses the Summer Associate Program as its primary recruiting tool for new associates. The firm hires summer associates based on an interview process as well as academic and professional credentials.
The firm structures the Summer Associate Program to provide exposure to a variety of the firm’s practice areas. Summer associates work directly with partners and associates on a wide variety of projects. Summer associates are given opportunities to attend trials, depositions, negotiations, client conferences, and closings. The firm’s mentoring committee helps ensure that each summer associate is getting a valuable experience that is rewarding and enjoyable. Throughout the summer, summer associates receive oral evaluations of their work product from the assigning attorneys. Summer associates also receive an end of summer written evaluation, which provides the summer associate with feedback on a variety of professional and personal skills, including issue analysis, research, and writing skills, oral presentation, use of time and efficiency, attitude, and responsibility.
The firm pays its summer associates an hourly rate and expects our summer associates to generally work a forty-hour week, leaving time for family, friends, and other outside interests. The firm requires our summer associates to put school first, and we offer flexible schedules for our summer associates who are invited to continue working through the school year.
The firm schedules several summer activities to encourage summer associates to get to know each other and the attorneys and staff. These activities include weekly lunches with the firm’s attorneys, firm parties, after-work happy hours, local baseball games, and a firm-wide golf outing.
